Dustin and I both work in sales and he often travels multiple days of the week. This week it turned out that we were both going to be in Wilmington, so we decided to make a night of it! I typically don’t travel overnight, but had a conference in Wilmington on Wednesday so it worked out perfectly. It’s truly a treasure when we get to spend this extra time together. Sometimes that means a random lunch during the week and other times it means a rendezvous in a new city. There’s just something fun about being in a hotel, right? I had never been to Wilmington before, but it is so cute!! I arrived late in the afternoon Tuesday and we walked around the downtown area and into some of the cutest shops.
After walking through some shops we walked down to the water. We were not staying on the coast, but the inlet was beautiful! It still smelled like the beach, so that was good enough for me. If only I’d had enough time to get a tan…
Dustin took me to a quaint, local restaurant called, “The Basics,” and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. They had an awesome beer selection and I’m not kidding when I say I wanted to try everything on the menu. We started off with some local beers and the fried green tomato appetizer. The tomatoes were topped with peppers, pickled onions, and drizzled with a spicy mustard. AH-MA-ZING.

Dustin ordered one of the nightly specials which was black drum topped with an avocado aioli served with charred spinach and cilantro lime rice. It was also so tasty! Anyone else out there make their significant other give you a bite?

We were so full and I was sad we didn’t save any room for dessert. Their menu consisted of Coca-Cola cake and hummingbird cake, so perfectly southern.
It was certainly a short trip, but it was good for the soul. Sometimes I get caught up in work and the overall business of life and it was so nice to be able to slow down and enjoy some time with Dustin in Wilmington. I highly recommend it for a weekend getaway. It is so easily accessible for my North Carolina people and it had a great feel. I’d love to hear any suggestions you have if you’ve ever been to Wilmington! I have a sneaky feeling we’ll be back!
